Stormy Weather Socks

I’d never done toe-up socks until this pair, and for the most part I found it pretty easy. I had done the short-row toe many times on other projects. The part I found difficult was finding the right heel. When I tried short-row heels I just didn’t like the way it fit (or didn’t fit!). It was hard to follow all of the different heel instructions for toe-up socks online, as there aren’t really any good pictures that go along with them. I finally settled on a heel that uses short row shaping, as well as a heel flap without having to pick up stitches. I’m not so fond of it, but it works better than just plain ole short rows.
What Have I Learned?
I also learned a new cast-off while doing this pair of socks, although that isn’t anything spectacular in itself. It is a sewn bind-off meant to be stretchy for something such as a toe-up sock. I was a little overcautious at first about making sure to keep the bind-off loose, because with this sewn method it makes the edge look ruffley. Definitely not the look I want for my husband’s sock. I realized afterward that I had sewn it too loose.
