Malabrigo Squares Afghan

This is the case of a yarn deciding what it wants to become. I bought this yarn on a whim because it is so soft, and I love the colors. It’s single ply, and I also adore the way it is spun and how it looks. It also turns out to really look great all knit up. I think I’m going to become a junkie for this stuff.
Originally I had settled on doing the Branching Out pattern from Knitty.com. I decided I want to try some lace-like knitting, and this pattern seemed like a good start. I have a feeling the yarn was telling me something, because I couldn’t get past 7 rows before I had to rip out the knitting and redo it five times!! On the fifth try I managed to get through a second pattern repeat; I was excited.
This is when I realized that my resulting scarf wasn’t turning out too great. I think my knitting was fine, and I loved working with the yarn. However, the yarn really clashed with the pattern, and the pattern really clashed with the yarn. It was wayyy too much, so I eventually decided to rip it all out.
After some thinking, I think the yarn convinced me that it would look awesome in just a simple stockinette stitch. How about a whole blanket full of the wonderful colors in this yarn, and all the softy goodness of the merino wool. Of course this afghan will give me an excuse to slowly and steadily acquire more and more of this yarn. Darn.
